You could be forgiven for thinking that the summer here was nothing more than a long holiday; certainly we weren’t able to get on with as much work as normal while we had visitors, but we weren’t idle all the time!

We need to install drainage from the new house to the septic tank, as well as from the roof to the old septic tank, to use for watering the garden, and piping to drain the garden into the ditch. Work started a few weeks ago, but it’s not quick as it can only be done when Kieran’s here to help. They have dug a trench the entire width of the back of the house, built a retaining wall,and  concreted the rather fragile and broken looking foundations. Some of the pipes are now in place and they’re hoping to finish next week, weather permitting, filing in the trench and laying a path.

We still haven’t finished the filling of plasterboard joints in the new house, it seems an endless task; but most of the ground floor is done, enabling me to paint the two bedrooms, and it shouldn’t take long to finish off in the hall now. Hopefully once that’s done, we can begin the job of tiling the floors and things will really start to take shape.

Another long job was finishing the walls in the hall; the house is built of roofing tiles, very attractive, but we’ve had to cover most of them up, to insulate the outer walls. The hall walls, however, could be left, but needed pointing; it’s a large expanse of wall and took many hours, but with help from Kieran and John, it’s now finished and looking really good.

Our temporary staircase has been something of a movable feast recently; going one way when we needed access to the wall beside it, or to allow the placing of scaffolding, and back again so it met the wall while we had visitors, who mostly feel distinctly uncomfortable using stairs with no bannister on either side. We needed to build a part height wall at the edge of the sitting room, but that was where the stairs led to, so down they came again, and this time Nick cut them in two, built a landing and put them back, reconfigured. It felt like living in a chapter of Harry Potter until we got used to it!

Apart from that, we’ve moved plants around the garden and Nick’s nearly finished the fireplace, so we are making progress – slowly.

Les travaux ont commencé il ya quelques semaines, mais ce n’est pas rapide car on ne peut le faire que quand Kieran est là pour nous aider. Lui et Nick ont creusé une tranchée sur toute la largeur de l’arrière de la maison, ont construit un mur de soutènement, et ont bétonné les fondations plutôt fragiles et brisés. Certains des tuyaux sont maintenant en place et ils esperent de terminer la semaine prochaine, si le temps le permet; remplissant la tranchée et la posant d’un chemin.

Nous n’avons pas encore terminé le remplissage des joints de plaques de plâtre dans la nouvelle maison, il semble une tâche sans fin; mais la plupart du rez de chaussée est fini, me permettant de peindre les deux chambres, et on espère qu’il ne faudra pas longtemps pour finir maintenant.  Une fois cela fait, nous pouvons commencer le travail de carrelage au sol et ça va vraiment commencer à prendre forme.

Un autre travail de longue haleine achevait les murs du foyer; la maison est construite de tuiles, de très intéressantes, mais nous avons du à couvrir la plupart d’entre eux, pour isoler les murs extérieurs. Les murs du foyer, cependant, pourraient être laissées, mais il fallait faire les joints; c’est un grand  mur et a fallu de nombreuses heures, mais avec l’aide de Kieran et John, il est maintenant fini et très joli.

Notre escalier temporaire a été très mobile récemment; dans un sens quand nous avions besoin l’accès au mur à côté d’eux, ou pour permettre la mise en place des échafaudages, et à nouveau à coté du mur alors que nous avions des visiteurs, qui se sentent mal à l’aise en utilisant un escalier sans rampe de chaque côté. Nous avions besoin de construire un mur à la lisière de la salle de séjour, mais c’était où l’escalier conduisait;  cette fois, Nickl’ a coupé en deux, a construit un atterrissage et l’a remit, reconfiguré. C’était comme vivre dans un chapitre de Harry Potter jusqu’à ce que nous sommes habitués!

En dehors de cela, nous avons démenagé des plantes dans le jardin et Nick a presque terminé la cheminée, donc nous faisons des progrès – lentement.
